Preparing for tattoo sessions during cold & Flu season

ree

Stay healthy, respectful, and ready for your next tattoo – even during sniffle season.

Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but if your appointment lands during cold and flu season, there are some extra steps you’ll need to take to make sure the experience is safe and smooth for both you and your artist.

Whether it’s your first tattoo or your tenth, showing up sick (or getting tattooed while your immune system is already compromised) can lead to complications with healing, not to mention putting others at risk. Here’s how to properly prepare for your tattoo session during cold and flu season.

1. Don’t Get Tattooed If You’re Sick

Let’s start with the most important point: If you’re sick, stay home. Whether it's a cold, flu, or any other contagious illness, it’s best to reschedule.

Here’s why:

  • Immune system strain: Your body needs all its resources to fight infection or illness. Getting tattooed adds another stressor your immune system has to handle, which can slow healing and increase the risk of infection.

  • Increased pain: When you’re sick, your body is more sensitive. What might normally be manageable pain can feel much worse.

  • Respect for your artist and others: Tattoo artists work closely with clients for hours at a time. Spreading illness puts them and future clients at risk.

Most reputable tattoo shops are understanding about rescheduling for illness-just give them as much notice as possible.

2. Boost Your Immune System Before Your Appointment

Even if you’re feeling fine, it’s smart to prepare your body:

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment. Hydrated skin is healthier and takes ink better. Getting adding electrolytes is important, we love Liquid I.V.:

  • Eat nutrient-rich foods: Load up on fruits, vegetables, and whole foods that support your immune system.

  • Get good sleep: A well-rested body can handle stress better, including tattoo pain and healing.

  • Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine: These can dehydrate you and thin your blood, which can affect your session.

  • Supplements such as "Kick-Ass Immune" can help your body during cold & flu season- especially recommended when traveling.

3. Practice Good Hygiene

Cold and flu viruses spread easily during this time of year. Keep yourself (and your artist) safe:

  • Wash your hands frequently

  • Use hand sanitizer if soap and water aren't available.

  • Avoid touching your face, especially in public or while traveling.

  • Wear a mask if you are in close contact with others leading up to your session.

  • Avoid large crowds or gatherings leading up to your appointment.

Most studios already have strong hygiene protocols in place, but it helps when clients are proactive too.

4. Dress for the Season and the Session

  • Wear layers: Tattoo studios are usually climate-controlled, but you’ll want to be comfortable before, during, and after your session.

  • Wear clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed without needing to fully undress.

  • Bring a clean hoodie or jacket: After your session, especially if it’s a larger piece, your body might feel cold due to adrenaline wear-off.

5. Bring the Right Supplies

During cold and flu season, a little extra preparation goes a long way:

Things to bring:

  • Water bottle

  • Healthy snacks and lunch

  • A blanket

*Tissues, Hand sanitizer, masks, light snacks and water are always available at the studio.

These small comforts can make a long session more enjoyable and help you feel your best.

6. Aftercare Is Even More Important

Post-tattoo care always matters, but it’s even more critical during illness season:

  • Follow your artist’s aftercare instructions exactly

  • Keep the tattoo clean

  • Avoid exposure to people who are sick

  • Get extra rest to support healing

  • Continue hydrating and eating nutrient dense foods

Final Thoughts

Cold and flu season doesn’t have to stop your tattoo plans – but it does require a bit more responsibility and awareness. Prioritize your health, be honest with your artist, and don’t be afraid to reschedule if you’re not feeling 100%. Your body (and your tattoo) will thank you.
